Red Bull, best known for its energy drink but also well
known for its love of extreme sporting events, such as Formula 1 racing, the
Red Bull Flugtag and so on, is now giving even more people wings and nightmares
with their extreme VR platform.
The platform is designed for couch potatoes who want to be daring and athletic and brave, but lack the courage, physique and nerve, or who simply don’t have the time to train into optimum condition, then spend hours learning a new sport or stunt. With virtual reality, it is possible to travel anywhere in the blink of an eye, to walk on the moon or even the sun, and to plumb the deepest depths of the ocean, all without any training, equipment or even leaving the security of your own home! Some of the extreme sports you can try include:
Cliff diving: cliff diving is the practise of leaping off a cliff, usually into the sea but it can be into a lake or river, timing the jump so that the water is high enough to allow the diver to land safely. Overly shallow water can result in the diver plunging through the water and injuring themselves on the river bed or on rocks or submerged trees. Cliff diving in real life takes hours of preparation and years of practise and can result in serious injury or even death, but with VR you can experience the plummeting jolt within minutes of deciding you want to try it out!
Skiing: the joke is that skiing causes broken legs, but it is a joke rooted in grim reality. Skis are awkward things, and having them strapped to our feet can make us ungainly. It is all too easy to fall off the skis, and when this happened the sheer size of the skis and the firmness of their fastenings makes our legs and ankles the weak point and – snap! VR skiing is much safer, with an authentic sensation of whizzing down hills and over jumps, but with no nasty or painful consequences.
Helicopter aerobatics and parkour are just two more examples of what can be done from the safety of your virtual reality headset, activities that can be dangerous in real life, but that are simply tremendous fun in VR.
Your long-cherished aim to walk on the moon, touch the bottom of the ocean, or fly through the stars and planets of the solar system do not need to remain unfulfilled dreams. Thanks to VR, there is now very little that you cannot do!
