Is Porn Feminist?

by Beth Divine 7 Dec 2017

Is there a feminist side to porn?

A lot of people think that porn is ‘bad’, that it is insulting to women and aimed purely at men. The same people probably believe that anyone claiming to be a feminist or to support feminist tendencies would automatically be against pornography for the following reasons:

-          That porn is degrading to women,

-          that it objectifies women,

-          and that it portrays very unrealistic relationships between men and women.

However, these attitudes are based on assumptions that are old-fashioned and wrong.

Saying that porn is demeaning to women predicates that sex is a male-only pleasure – that men are the only ones who enjoy having and watching sex, and this is not true at all. Women do need a more emotional connection to fully enjoy a sexual fantasy, but that does not mean that women do not get turned on watching porn, nor that they cannot bring themselves to very satisfactory orgasm with the aid of visual stimulus like porn.

Arguably, virtual reality porn offers even more to women than it does to men, with penetrative sex toys being widely available on the market. There are even apps that can be synced with toys via Bluetooth so that a set program of stimulation can be played out.

Women are always going to be objects of desire for their sexual partners – but then, any person can be an object of desire to others, this is not a purely gendered issue. Therefore, protesting against porn because it objectifies women as the subjects of male sexual fantasy is a very narrow truth: yes, it does, but porn ‘objectifies’ all the characters to all the viewers in whatever combination that they find to be hot. As long as the porn stars do not mind being used as aids to orgasm, why should this be a problem? As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks!

Finally, the argument that porn portrays unrealistic relationships between men and women. Well, of course it does! Porn is not a life commentary, it is not a call to action, it is not all about improving minds and souls. Porn is about sexual satisfaction, about being horny and getting relief. Even the best rom-coms, love stories and even adventures have people meeting eyes across a room and falling in love without getting to know each other, porn movies are more of the same, hot people meet, are attracted to each other and fuck their brains out – simple, uncomplicated and easy escapism.
