Introducing Porn Stars 5/6

by Beth Divine 28 Jun 2018

Many people think that women turn to porn because they need to earn a living and don’t have any other skills. While this may be true for some stars, it is much less prevalent than it used to be, and more stars have embraced life in front of the camera willingly, and alongside having fantastic – and more socially acceptable – accomplishments under their belt. (Pun intended, of course!)

Nina Hartley

Born Marie Louise Hartman, Nina Hartley chose her porn name because ‘Nina’ was easy for her Japan devotees to pronounce. She chose ‘Hartley’ because she liked the camera advertisements featuring James Garner and Mariette Hartley. She was attracted by the porn industry after seeing The Autobiography of a Flea, the first adult film directed by a woman, Sharon McNight, and began to work in the industry even as she completed her nursing degree. She graduated magna cum laude, and held her nursing qualification until its expiry. Like some of the other women featured in this series, she fully embraced her sexuality and after retiring from the business has devoted her life to ensuring that as many people as possible are educated and encouraged to embrace their sexuality, making the most of their libido instead of feeling ashamed about it. During her career, she performed in over 800 movies, directed up to 16 others (mainly the ‘Nina Hartley’s Guide to…’ series.) She successfully crossed over to mainstream, featuring in Hollywood block-buster Boogie Nights, as well as Canadian film Bubbles Galore. She now tours the country, a sex-positive feminist and board member of the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance, which fights against sexual repression.

Asia Carrera

A musical prodigy who played Carnegie Hall at 15, and was working as an English teacher in Japan at 16, Asia Carrera could have excelled in any field that she chose to grace with her interest – not least because she is a card-carrying Mensa member with an IQ just a few points shy of Einstein and the late Stephen Hawking who both boasted IQs of 160. Born Jessica Steinhauser, Carrera earned a full scholarship to Rutgers University, but never actually graduated as she moved into the porn industry in her early twenties and – presumably – found her calling for which she did not need a degree or other paper qualifications. She has performed in over 400 films and has a wide and enthusiastic fan base, and has also directed several films. She retired from porn in 2003, to focus on having and raising a family with second husband Don Lemmon who tragically died just three years later.
