Using Condoms – How do porn stars choose?

by Beth Divine 26 Aug 2018

Using a condom during casual sex is only sensible. Condoms prevent unwanted pregnancies, and stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and are widely acknowledged to be a sensible precaution in today’s world of hook-up sex and online dating apps. How do porn stars decide if they are going to insist on condom use or otherwise, and why do they make the decisions they do?

Condoms are an excellent way to prevent the spread of disease, physically blocking body fluids and semen from entering the other person’s body. However, it is important to remember that blow jobs and facials also introduce body fluids into and onto other people’s bodies.

Condoms also work to prevent unwanted pregnancies. The purpose of sex is to reproduce so it is not surprising that without intervention in the form of the pill or condoms, that many female porn stars would end up pregnant on a regular basis. Imagine finding out that your whole reason for being was because your mum didn’t take precautions at her work… Not a pleasant thought, and an excellent reason to use a condom.

Another good reason for using condoms in porn is to encourage safe practices amongst viewers – seeing their favourite stars using condoms as a matter of course can ensure that their safety becomes engrained and just something that should be done as a matter of course.

This is not to say that condom use is guaranteed to be the safest way to operate:

Condoms prevent the very popular ‘money shot’. Money shots are scenes in which the male porn star comes, either inside the pussy, ass or mouth of the female star, or on some part of her body. This visible spunk is valued as it gives authenticity and a sense of closure to any sex scene. Obviously, with a condom, all the ejaculate is contained inside the condom, unless the male star removes it just before he comes: which then begs the question of why it was used at all!

Putting a condom on kills the flow of the scene, and disrupts the intensity of the penetrative scenes, which makes it harder to film gripping scenes that will keep a viewer hooked until the final credits roll.

Finally, when they know that condoms will be used, porn stars tend not to go for regular testing. This can mean that disease is still passed around, and it can be quite some time before the illness is picked up, meaning that a) more people are affected by the disease and that b) treatment can be more complicated as the disease has longer to take a hold on the body.

So it is difficult to say whether condom use should be enforced or not – for the time being, it will probably remain as it is: with most porn stars prepared to not use condoms as long as they and everyone they will come into sexual contact with is prepared to be tested for infections on a very regular basis.
