Porn and School Shootings – Cause and Effect or Nah?

by Beth Divine 19 Nov 2018

American republican congresswomen Diane Black has an unusual (and completely unscientific and unproven) theory as to the cause of all the school shootings in America. Her ill-educated ramble about porn being responsible for school shootings, segued into mentions of mental illness and she then had a concerted mutter about ‘broken homes’ and ‘dysfunction’.

Ploughing through her many awkwardly phrased sentences (or to be scrupulously fair, ploughing through an article claiming to speak for her) it seems as though she is trying to say that, firstly, people from non-traditional homes are mentally ill and (secondly, with a strong implication being there’s some cause and effect going on here) that they are therefore more likely to watch porn.

At which point, presumably their tiny brains would be so excited, and so deprived of blood (because it will all be flooding into their overly stimulated genitals) at the sight of all that readily available and heaving flesh that they will crack out their biggest and baddest penis substitute which with to ‘sow their (leaden) seed’ all over their local high school. Black makes no attempt to back up these laughable ideas with anything approaching scientific evidence…

The whole theory is specious thinking from someone who should know better: fallacies and accusations dressed up as morality but sounding like judgement being bestowed on anyone who dares to be different.

The actual cause of school shootings? Firstly, ridiculously easy access to guns, enshrined in the constitution and clung to, limpet-like, despite the immense changes that have been wrought in gun-making technologies over the years since the Bill of Rights was drawn up… Secondly, deep entrenchment of the ‘goodness and bestness’ of the US. Children are indoctrinated in the belief that the USA is the best country in the world, that to live in America demands full, unwavering and unquestionable patriotism and that anyone who questions this, even for a second is mad, dangerous and probably a terrorist. This sort of brainwashing propaganda would be decried in any other nation, but is accepted without question by almost all Americans, especially those who have never travelled. Thirdly, the tightly niched school system that labels (jock, cheerleader, nerd) and torments kids (loser, loner, stoner, goth, emo, etc), permitting the bullying of those who are not seen as alphas in the system, is a major trigger of these incidents. Schools should treat all children as equally valuable, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, protecting them while they do so, and building their confidence and maturity. Instead, a child labelled a ‘loser’ in the school system receives no help from anyone, not their fellow students, not their teachers (who occasionally join in the torment) and certainly not the government which has repeatedly proven that it gives not one shit about the lives of American black people, American women, and even American children.

After all, children don’t vote, so what’s the point…
